The nutmeg tree produces a fruit that contains a hard seed, known as a nutmeg. When ripe, the fruit splits open to reveal the seed covered in a lacy reddish-brown membrane called mace. Both the nutmeg and the mace are used as spices, but nutmeg is more commonly known and used.

Nutmeg is available in different forms, including whole nutmeg, ground nutmeg, and pre-ground nutmeg powder. Whole nutmeg can be grated or ground using a spice grinder or a nutmeg grater to obtain the spice in its freshest form.

Nutmeg is used in both sweet and savory dishes. It is a popular ingredient in baking and is commonly found in recipes for cakes, pies, cookies, and custards. Nutmeg adds warmth and depth of flavor to these desserts. In savory dishes, nutmeg is used in various cuisines to enhance the flavor of sauces, soups, stews, and meat dishes.
